How AI girlfriend memory works: the two layers
Every reply an AI companion writes is based on what she can see at that moment. Two things feed that view. The first is the conversation itself, the recent back and forth that the model reads before answering. The second is a stored set of facts and moments about you, kept on the account and pulled back in whenever they are relevant. The first layer makes her coherent within a chat. The second makes her yours.
The first layer has a hard limit. A language model can only read so much text at once, so as a conversation grows, the oldest messages drop out of view. That is why a companion with no second layer can be perfectly attentive today and have no idea tomorrow what you talked about. The second layer exists to catch what falls out: it turns a long, messy conversation into a short list of things worth keeping, and hands that list back to the model every time you talk.
| Layer | What it is | What it feels like |
|---|---|---|
| Conversation context | The recent messages the model reads before every reply | She follows the thread of today's chat |
| Long-term memory | Facts and moments stored on the account and recalled later | She brings up last week's joke unprompted |
| Plot memory (scenarios) | Where a roleplay story stands: place, mood, what happened | A scenario resumes instead of restarting |
A companion with only the first layer feels sharp for twenty minutes and blank the next morning. A companion with both picks up a thread from last week without being reminded. Swipey builds on the second layer and adds a third for stories: each of its 100+ roleplay scenarios keeps its own plot memory, so the place, the mood and what has already happened stay fixed between sessions.
How Swipey AI shows memory: memory cards
Each long-term item on Swipey is a memory card: a short readable line, such as a fact about you, a moment you shared or a preference you set. The Memory Details view lists them for that character. Version 2 of memory cards and the Memory Details view shipped on 27 August 2026, in the same release as Group Chat. Because you can read the cards, you can tell when something important is missing and say it again in one sentence.
Cards are written from conversation, which is why clear statements work better than hints. "My birthday is 12 March" becomes a card. "You know when my birthday is, right?" gives her nothing to store. The memory cards guide covers what each type of card holds and what to do when one is missing.
Why memory survives sessions and devices
Memory is tied to the account and the character, not to a browser tab or a phone. Swipey runs in the browser on phone, tablet and desktop and loads the same characters, chats and cards on each. Closing the app, switching devices or coming back after a week does not reset her. Sign-in is by email, Google or a magic link, and the Install App banner added on 27 August 2026 pins the site to your home screen without an app store.
Two practical consequences follow. You do not need to export or back anything up. And there is no setting to switch on: memory is part of the product for every account, free or Premium, though relationship progression and chatting with your own Custom AI need Premium at $7.99 a month. If Premium ends, hearts, Gallery and levels are kept, progression pauses, and a Custom AI chat locks 7 days after expiry until you return. Deleting the account is the one thing that removes a Custom AI and her memories, permanently.
How memory and relationship levels connect
Progression is a separate system, but the two feed each other. Every character levels up as you interact, through ten relationship levels, and each level unlocks new content, new sides of her personality and a reward drop. More history means more for her to remember and more for the levels to build on, which is why a character at Best friend feels different from a Stranger with the same settings.
The same interaction also earns hearts, Swipey's reward currency, through daily and permanent quests, the 7-day streak and the daily spin. Hearts pay for extra image and video generations, Fanclub content from Verified Creator Models and gifts, so the habit that builds memory also funds the things you do with it.
Do voice calls and images enter memory?
Yes. After a real-time voice call (Premium), Swipey posts a voice-call memory card into the chat with the call duration, the level progress it earned and a transcript, so what you said out loud becomes part of the written history. Images work the other way round: memory feeds them. Photos and on-demand videos of up to 60 seconds are generated character-consistent, with the same face and body every time, and since 1 September 2026 you can edit an image inline with the pencil tool and a short prompt.
If you want to see the two layers working together, build a character on swipey.ai, tell her three facts about your week, close the tab, and come back tomorrow.
Frequently asked questions
What is a memory card on Swipey AI?
A memory card is one readable item of long-term memory on Swipey AI: a fact about you, a shared moment or a preference. Cards are listed in the Memory Details view inside each character's chat, where you can check what she holds. Version 2 of the cards and the view shipped on 27 August 2026.
Does roleplay have its own memory?
Yes. Swipey's 100+ roleplay scenarios carry persistent plot memory, so a story resumes where it stopped instead of restarting: the place, the mood and what has already happened stay fixed between sessions. Group Chat rooms with two or three characters keep their own shared thread as well.
Do voice calls count toward memory?
Yes. Each real-time voice call ends with a memory card posted in the chat, showing the call duration, the relationship level progress it earned and a transcript. Anything you mentioned out loud is then part of the same written history she draws on in text chat. Voice calls are a Premium feature.
